How it works

The first discount comes off the original price, either as a percent or as a fixed amount. Any extra discount is then taken as a percent of that already reduced price. The total saving is the difference between the original and final price.

Formula

  • Price after first discount = price − (price × discount % ÷ 100), or price − amount off
  • Final price = price after first discount × (1 − extra discount % ÷ 100)
  • You save = original price − final price
  • Total discount % = you save ÷ original price × 100

Frequently asked questions

Why don't 20% off and an extra 10% off make 30% off?

The extra 10% is taken from the price that is already reduced, not from the original. On a price of 100, the first discount brings it to 80, and 10% of 80 is only 8, so you pay 72. That is a total saving of 28%, slightly less than 30%.

Does the order of two percentage discounts matter?

No. Taking 10% off and then 20%, or 20% and then 10%, gives the same final price because each one multiplies the price by a fixed factor. Order only matters when one of the discounts is a fixed amount.

Is sales tax or VAT included?

This calculator works with whatever price you enter. If the shelf price already includes tax, the result includes it too. If tax is added at the till, work out the discounted price here and then add tax with the sales tax calculator.

How do I work out the percent off from two prices?

Enter the original price, choose amount off and enter the difference between the two prices. The total discount shows what that saving is as a percent of the original price.
