How it works

With a flat rate, commission is simply your sales times the rate. With tiers, each rate applies only to the slice of sales that falls inside its tier, much like income tax bands, so reaching a higher tier never lowers what you earned below it. Your total earnings are base pay plus commission.

Formula

  • Flat: commission = sales × rate ÷ 100
  • Tiered: commission = Σ (sales inside each tier × that tier's rate ÷ 100)
  • Total earnings = base pay + commission
  • Average rate = commission ÷ sales × 100

Frequently asked questions

How do tiered commission rates work here?

Each tier's rate applies only to the part of your sales between where that tier starts and where the next one begins. For example, with 3% up to 20,000 and 5% above it, sales of 30,000 earn 3% on the first 20,000 and 5% on the remaining 10,000.

My plan pays the higher rate on all sales once I hit a target. Can I model that?

Some plans work that way, where reaching a tier lifts the rate on every sale. To model it, choose flat rate and enter the rate for the tier you reached. This calculator's tiered option always treats tiers as slices.

What if my first tier doesn't start at zero?

Sales below the first tier's starting level earn no commission. This matches plans where commission only kicks in after you pass a minimum, sometimes called a threshold or quota.

What is the average commission rate?

It is your total commission divided by your total sales. With tiers it sits somewhere between your lowest and highest rate, and it shows what you earned on average from each unit of sales.
